STILL FRAME ANALYSIS

'Stop' - directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green

'Get Off My Land' - directed by Douglas Ray

'About A Girl'- directed by Brian Percival

This still frame image  is in a medium shot showing a teenage boy walking home at night. The mise en scene of his clothes suggests that he young as he is wearing a hoodie and carrying a large backpack suggesting that he may be a student.

The still frame does not show the characters face leaving their identity a mystery. This relates to the story of the short as we are following the young man who gets stopped on his way home by the police.  The importance of not showing his face could be to show the audience that people can make judgements about you based on what your are wearing, relating to society's view of young people who wear hoodies. The background of the still frame conveys an urban setting as there are may lights in the sky; which suggests a large amount of buildings around.

The lighting of the shot is very dark which could connote that there is an element of darkness or conflict within the scene as the character could be seen as a threat based solely on his attire. The dark colours could also represent the isolation the young man is facing as he is walking home in the dark by himself. The colours could reflect the area he is walking through as it is shown to be an urban area meaning that it might not be the safeist area in the city.

The path the young man is walking on goes out of focus in the still frame. This could possibly reflect the possibility of him not making it home due to him being stopped by the police or that the area he is walking in could be dangerous.

The shot used in the still frame image is a medium close up as we can see the man’s shoulders.  The images central focus is middle aged man, who appears to be a farmer. This is suggested because the mise en scene of the costume signifies that he could be a farm we due to his thick coat and hat. The man is also holding a shotgun  which connotes that his work requires him to us it to scare away unwanted animals off his farmland. In the background of the mage the setting shows that the scene took place in an outside area, perhaps a field of farmland.

This scene in the film is used to conclude what the film is about, this makes the film reach a climax. The low angle is used to denote the direction in which the baby is travelling which is deep in the water and down south and lower than the surface of the water and the world. This connotes that the baby is sinking deeper into the dirty water and leaving the world and leaving the girls thoughts as the further the baby travels the deeper the baby is travelling towards the back of her thoughts.

The girl’s thoughts are reflected through the water in the canal as the water is a darker colour and not clear which connotes her thoughts about the situation with having a baby and not being able to deal with the baby at her young tender age. The baby escaping the white plastic bag which contains a lot of blood signifies a lot about the girl and the baby.

The bag being white represents purity of the baby and the girl and how the girl has been keeping all her feelings which are represented through the blood which signifies evil thoughts and danger are finally escaping and becoming transparent in the water

The fact that the baby is pale and white represents how cold and how innocent the baby is but comes with a lot of issues and problems as the blood is following the baby in to the water.

The red blood represents the negative of her having the baby and the burden and death it would bring to the family as it’s a big responsibility and by having the baby it would hinder her a lot in life and would cause destruction.

The white bag represents purity and youth which is what the young girl  is but also shows the detachment that she is going through with the baby as the bag is left to float on the water the baby is travelling in a different direction.

The clear sky reflects a positive outcome for the young girl that she can move on with her life and that she has a second chance. As the colours of the sky represent hope. Even though the image is not visually appealing it portrays that the journey the girl went through with holding on to the bag and protecting she is able to let go and see her baby be wasshed away literally.

In this long shot the girl is shown to be sitting on a bridge by that canal. The long shot denotes the girl looks lonely and is isolated and is lost and trapped in her feelings. It connotes that she is isolated and the dirt of the water is a clear representation of her mind and how much of a mess she is in and the obstacles she has faced in her young life.

The mise en scene of her costume denotes her young age and her white jacket represents her youthful young life. The distance in the long shot signifies how she is separated from everything around her as the barriers behind her denote her mind and how trapped she is which connotes her not being able to escape the situation.

The plastic bag which is white which is next to her represents purity and innocence and through the mise en scene of her facial expressions it connotes her emotions towards the bag and not being able to decide on what decision to make. Through the mise en scene of her position sitting in the middle of the bridge it represents her not being able to make up her mind.

Through the mise en scene of her posture she has closed posture in her upper body which conveys  her not wanting to let anyone in and be close to her however her legs are apart which portrays her still being strong and knowing she needs to walk from the bag or keep the bag. The colour of the water river represents the mood of the scene but also the mood that she is and how she is feeling as it is dull and neglected.

The stillness of the water conveys how deserted the place is and there are no distractions are but also how still she wants to be to make up her mind however they are confronted with other thoughts which is the rubbish left in the water.

Room 8

James Griffiths

Through this close up shot we are able to see the man looking at his hand. This raises questions to the audience about the red box. The colour red denotes danger and as he is able to see his hand through it questions how safe the box is for the man to be in.

The box is very significant and through the close up shot it shows how close the man’s hand is to his face. This denotes how mysterious the box as it allows the man to see his hand through it .This connotes the thoughts that may be running through his man as his hand is in the box for a while this raises questions of whether he is able to escape the prison.

The mise en scene of the lighting shows her dark the room is which denotes how old the prison is but also denotes the mood in the room which is not a happy atmosphere but a gloomy mood which denotes all hope has gone in that room of leaving. The box being open denotes that light has come from the box this connotes hope of escaping and a positive thing may come from escaping where the light is.

The shot portrays prison life and how it really is which is plain and small, this is reflected through the things available to the prisoners through the props for example the desk is very old also the pillow doesn’t look completely  white which connotes it’s dirty and has been used.

This medium close up shot shows the man reaching to touch his hand. This denotes how mysterious the box is to allow him touch hand. This is shown through the mise en scene of his facial expressions which denotes how in awe he is of what is happening. This also connotes the questions that might be running through his mind at what is happening.

Through his body language it portrays that if he was going to follow the hand this connotes that he would be able to leaving the prison as he would be moving up, however if he chooses not to follow the hand he will remain in the prison as his body language is positioned lower.

This denotes that he would remain in the prison cell. The medium shot allows us to see another angle to the room and the walls look thick and neglected which denotes that they have been neglected along with the bed.

The bunk bed looks out of date which denotes that they have not been changed and have been neglected just like the walls which connotes that they may be neglected in the same way.

The mise en scene of the lighting in the corner denotes the light and a new path. It shows the mood is more happy where as the mood in the right side denotes it being sad, which connotes that’s the feeling they may feel if he left in the prison cell.
